چکیده

Equity and Efficiency in Multi-Worker Firms: Insights from Experimental Economics In this paper, we discuss recent evidence from economic experiments that study the impact of social preferences on workplace behavior. We focus on situations in which a single employer interacts with multiple employees. Traditionally, equity and efficiency have been seen as opposing aims in such work environments: individual pay-for-performance schemes maximize efficiency but might lead to inequitable outcomes. We present findings from laboratory experiments that show under which circumstances partially incomplete contracts can create equitable work environments while at the same time reaching surprisingly efficient outcomes. Evidence on Asset Sales and Income Management: Case of Iran

This study empirically examines whether managers manipulate reported income through the timing of sales of long-lived assets and investments. Several empirical implications of the income-smoothing and debt-equity hypothesis in the context of asset sales were tested. The findings are consistent with the timing of asset sales by managers so that the recognized accounting income from these sales s...

Building Blocks in the Economics of Mandates

Building Blocks in the Economics of Mandates The paper constructs an asymmetric information model to investigate the efficiency and equity cases for government mandated benefits. A mandate can improve workers' insurance, and may also redistribute in favour of more "deserving" workers. The risk is that it may also reduce output. The more diverse are free market contracts – separating the various...

Evaluating the Efficiency of Firms with Negative Data in Multi-Period Systems: An Application to Bank ‎Data

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a mathematical technique to evaluate the performance of firms with multiple inputs and outputs. In conventional DEA models, the efficiency scores of Decision Making Units (DMUs) with non-negative inputs and outputs are evaluated in a special period of time. However, in the real world there are situations wherein performance of firms must be evaluated in multip...

Does Pay Inequality Affect Worker Effort? Experimental Evidence

We study worker behavior in an efficiency-wage environment where co-workers’ wages can influence a worker’s effort. Theoretically, we show that an increase in workers’ responsiveness to co-workers’ wages should lead profit-maximizing firms to compress wages. Our laboratory experiments, on the other hand, show that --while workers’ effort choices are highly sensitive to their own wages-effort is...
